Many depressed people have a very harsh Inner Critic. They carry a heavy burden of self-criticism that drains their energy and batters their self-esteem. They also tend to have brittle expectations about the way others should behave and how the world should function.
Learning to identify and let go of unhealthy judgments are key steps toward freeing yourself from depressive thinking. When you do that you can look at situations from multiple perspectives and consider several ways of responding. Learning to take alternative perspectives and actions liberates you from the narrow, rigid patterns of thought and action that characterize depression.
